Kicked-Up Vitamin C Shot

I somehow seemed to make it through flu season unscathed and then...Spring happened. The weather finally started to break this weekend and all of a sudden my throat started getting scratchy and a cough started to come on. I immediately started panicking because 1) it's Memorial Day weekend and I can't be inside my apartment all weekend feeling crappy and 2) I have to shoot a video for work on Tuesday and it's just not a good look to show up all sick with a scratchy voice.  

Now for the most part I'm usually pretty stubborn when it comes to taking over the counter medication. I'll admit I used to be a huge pill popper but I've realized it definitely takes a toll on your body over time. So lately I've been turning to more natural alternatives whenever I'm not feeling so great. So yesterday morning I started rummaging through my cabinets for something I could throw together to make a natural cold remedy.  My go to is usually lime and honey because growing up whenever we started to feel sick my mom would always give that to us and it seemed to do the trick. It's sort of like the 'catch all cure', like Vicks. Panamanians always joke if you have a headache use VICKS. Sore throat, VICKS. Depression, VICKS. Ask a Panamanian about Vicks and they'll tell you. 

SO! I decided to kick the basic lime and honey recipe up a little bit with some cayenne and oregano spirits. I've been taking this shot 2-3 times daily and since I started my sore throat disappeared in no time and my cold symptoms have been improving. This shot has been a life saver. Well...not literally but you know what I mean. 

Now VICKS...Vicks saves lives. Facts. 

So here is a breakdown of the ingredients I use for my vitamin c shot and their benefits:

Oregano Spirits/Oil of Oregano: Effectively combats viruses, bacteria and yeast, the three main causes of sore throats. Oregano spirits is a potent natural antibiotic and antiviral. 

Cayenne Pepper: This potent spice works on mucus to break it up and keep it moving, so congestive symptoms are relieved.

Ginger: Helps flush out toxins from your body and boosts your blood circulation. Its anti-inflammatory properties also help kill bad bacteria.

Grade B Maple Syrup: Zinc found in maple syrup, supports immune systems.

Orange, Lemon and Lime Juice:  Loaded with vitamin C which is known to support the body’s natural defenses. Orange (lemon and lime) juice is reported to decrease the strength of the cold and flu virus in the body and reduce phlegm. 

Kicked-Up Vitamin C Shot

  • Juice of one orange
  • Juice of 2 limes
  • Pinch of cayenne
  • 1/4 tsp grade b maple syrup
  • 4 drops of oregano spirits or oil of oregano
  • 1 large thumb of freshly grated ginger

Instructions

Mix together and add to a shot glass. Refrigerate remaining amount. Take 2-3 times daily or as needed.
